 I was 19 years old when I had a miscarriage. I continued to bleed for about three months straight. It was beyond any pain I can describe. My doctor recommended I go on the Depo shot as it is known to put a stop a woman's period. So i went for it, and it did reduce the amount of bleeding but i still bled for six months. Then it stopped. So I decided to stay on it, and was on it for six years.
I have been off it now for two years and still haven't had a period, which trust me I'm not really complaining about that! However, I did bring this up to my doctor a year and a half ago and she dismissed it as no big deal. Now a year and a half later it's finally a problem. My doctor referred me to a gynecologist and i had an ultrasound and blood work done. I have hypothyroidism and PCOS. I never had these issues before depo and i feel as though it could have been treated earlier had my doctor not blown me off the first time i brought it up. I had to go through an extremely painful procedure called an endometrial biopsy. This is where they go in through the cervix and into the uterus and scrape off a sample of the uterus lining to test it for cancer and other possible issues. Although there is no direct link to PCOS from the Depo shot, i do believe this is the main factor for all my current medical issues. I hope by sharing my story helps raise awareness.
