MY DEPO STORY - ALYSSA TUTTLE

Hello, my Name is Alyssa, I was on depo almost 10 years ago and my body is still recovering.

I took the shot one time when I was in college as they said it was the best option for birth control at the time as they didn’t carry the pills I was on that gave me a period once every 3 months as my endometriosis makes them crippling and the birth control made it so much more bearable. When I got the shot the first few days everything was fine and normal but eventually I noticed I was always hungry and wanting to eat basically constantly. I gained between 30-40lbs within the three months. It also ruined my mood, I have BPD so I am already pretty unstable, this however made me angry all the time, suicidal, and I relapsed on self harm within that time frame and attempted suicide.

I decided to not get back on it after that as I was not having a good time. Once the depo wore off it was the worse period imaginable. It was heavy like I had killed a small child and I bleed through tampons within 2 hours. The cramps were awful and I felt like I was going to die. The period lasted 2 weeks before it finally ended and was very erratic after that. It took a few years for them to become regular again but the pain and heaviness from it has stayed.

I don’t recommend the shot to anyone and I don’t know why it is still offered.
